Organize an Exhibition

Lesson 1

We had our first "text of the week", from which we distributed the tasks (practical/scientific) of an exhibition organizer. " Harald Szeemann once defined the functions of the Ausstellungsmacher - the one who puts on an exhibition - as an administrator, amateur, author of introductions, librarian, manager and accountant, animator, conservator, financier, and diplomat. This list can be expended by adding the functions of the guard, the transporter, the communicator, and the researcher. " Even if its a long list, this seemed to be not the end.

We added the functions of being, art historian, designer, seller, craftsman.
In the second part of the lesson, we had a look at a working place announcement. Than we learnt about the basics of creating a "plan for an exhibition". (Title, concept, location, works, press release, room plan, opening, text... about these later.
On the below website, I found a few interesting and useful info. about the topic:

Thats all so far, I am looking forward the next practicum,
which will be held at the Museum of Ethnography.

Lesson 2

We visited the Ludwig Museum, the video exhibition called : "... on the eastern front".
This exhibition examines the effects of the changes taking place in the region of the former "Soviet Bloc" on the individual and on various groups of society from the aspect of sociophychology. While walking through, our task was to complete a working sheet on the "organization". It was not just a content, but also medium basis exhibition. Organizing a low budget salon, not that easy, but i think the exhibitory made a great job, and made it not just interesting- educative, but a real adventure. Applying extra walls and curtains, made a really special atmosphere.
In the end, we had opportunity to speak with the curator, and to ask questions.
The trip was a real surprise for me, I think we will go back to see the videos we couldn't watch fully.

Lesson 3

First of all, we discussed the types of exhibitions. And then done the text of the week, where we could practise a bit our new knowledge. Than, we presented our presentations, about the exhibitions we saw lately, or we really liked. During the presentations, we had to fill a worksheet, where we have put it to different categories, of location, type and purpose.
In the second half of the lesson, we were about to put together, what is an exhibition consisting of, how to organize the tasks, in which order.
Idea=concept, Title, Location=date, Budget/Timing, Fund raising, Selection, Lists, Insurance, Contracts, Restauration, Transportation, Press release, Website, Press conference, Publicity, Advertisement, Poster, Banner flyer, Invitations, Layout model, Gifts, Museum shops, Interior designs, Arrange the Artworks, Installation, Labels and Discriptions, Technicual equipments, Lightening, Additional equipments, Audio guide=Interactive panels, Display Panel,Catalogue, Guest book, Security, Preview, Opening, Events, Finissage, Archaieve, Take down the exhibition, Transporting, Documentation, Attendence.

Lesson 5

Unfortunately, I had no opportunity to join the last lesson. Today, we visited the Budapest Ethnographical Museum at Kossuth Lajos square. We went there to see the Asian mask collection. During the visit, we had to fill out a worksheet. The way, at the exhibition the information was put through, can be considered traditional, conservative. It is the kind of "effective here, wont remember in two weeks" representation. On the other hand, with the darken rooms, they managed to hide the Neo-Renaissance surrounding, and adding light effects and music, they could gain a nice atmosphere.
The work I enjoyed the most was the Hevehe mask, which originally belongs to the Western Elma people of the Papuan Golf. What I missed from the exhibition, were a few maps, showing where are those people living.

Shame or not, at the exhibition, no matter how how I tried to find out, no-one (including me) knew where to place the Elma people on the map. :) Ok, thats a drawback of the exhibition, but i feel a bit compensated by the perfectly chosen lights, and the digital screens, which helped the information getting through easier. ( in case you could find the relevant information for the mask you wanted to read about :) ) In the end, we all agreed that it was also medium, and content basis exhibition.
In the end of our visit, we had to opportunity to speak with the curator of the Mask exposure. She was really nice and helpful, she gave us mainly inside information about the marketing a budget.

The trip was really successful, we have learnt a lot. I think we all enjoyed those mystical masks. The exposition pointed out for me the importance of masks for all different communities. I am looking forward our next lesson!

Lesson 6

Today we looked at the concept of a few exhibitions in class, that Sári found interesting to show us. We were mostly giving attention to the decoration and installation. It is very important to have all your decorations to support the installation, rather than something "just there".
Later on, we shared our ideas about our own ideas for an exhibition. I thought to make a Lipcsey Judit exhibition, titled: the memories of 10 years. I wont discuss the details now, since it is highly possible, that I will change this idea :)
Until the end of the lesson we were discussing the upcoming IBS exhibition. We soon had to find out, that it is not an easy task having 12 curators for a single exhibition :)))

I am looking forward our next lesson, which will take place somewhere around the city.

Lesson 7

Today we spent time for evaluating between good and bad catalogues. The lesson to be learnt, is that even if the catalogue very nice done, (high budget great design) it can be a bad one, if its not clear enough. The catalogues for primary importance has to serve as a means of information providing.
Than we spent time with our own photo exhibition. My task was mainly to help to put together the poster. I thought it is something easier :)

In the second half of the lesson, we have left the school, and went to the Várfok Gallery. We had an opportunity to speak with the "curator" (?) there. She gave us plenty of valuable information - about 1. how to keep the paintings safely + transportation , 2. How they decided upon the exhibited paintings, and what are the criteria of hanging them on the walls 3. how to frame the paintings, and the legal considerations for this( signet ) and so on.
It was a great opportunity for us, and I think we could really benefit from this trip.

Lesson 8

On this Thursday we went to the Trafó Kortárs Művészetek Háza. It was a great experience. We had the opportunity to speak with the curator of the exhibiting place. The gallery is located in the basement - she 'complained' - that it is better if there is an entrance from the street. Since the Art venues and the galleries has pretty much the same audience, that helps to push up the number of visitors for the gallery. They are also using a trick: Whoever buys the ticket or a performance, they can get a free ticket to the gallery. ( it is already free, but people are willing to attend something that is gratis)
Miss Erős argues, that there should be an entrance fee, but when they were asking for 200 forints, no-one wanted to-come.

We asked her about, what makes a good installation: In her opinion, the given place has to be taken full use of. The curator has to know all the places within the gallery. The different works has to be put together, in a way, that there still will be a small private place left for them. Thats really challenging, but when someone manages to do that, he/she has made a good installation.

I am looking forward our next class! Until that, with Vlada we will work out the decoration for the IBS photo exhibition. :*

The I best show (9)

Finally, all the pictures arrived most of them really good. It was important, since we had goo material to exhibit. We have put the posters on the walls, and printed out the pictures.
We prepared everything for the show. We distributed the tasks, and then done them one by one. It took approximately a day to make the pictures, to put them on the wall, to organize the decoration. In the end of the day, we were very proud of the work done. I think everyone did his/her best, and by the end we cohered a nice team.

The show itself: I BEST SHOWTIME!

The big day came - it was time for the opening. We changed the lights, put the projector to its place, and darkened the room. What was left is to pure champagne and put the pogacsa's on plates. We did the opening speech with Vlada,we announced the 5 winners and distributed the presents. The number of visitors was somewhat lower than expected. This led us to a conclusion that there should have been even more channels for letting people know: this exhibition opening is tooodayyy!! COME! :)

The atmosphere we managed to create was very pleasuring, and the music of David was incredibly good for this occasion. I think we all did a great job.

Thank you Sari for everything!!!!
